Senior Football 2013

SEASON CONTINUES... Round 6 review:

This weekend Abers hosted reigning EDFL Premiers Greenvale who sat equal with us on points but had a higher percentage to hold on to top of the ladder position.  The senior match, billed as the Match of the Round and broadcast live on 98.9 Northwest FM had drawn a bumper crowd eager to see the two top sides battle it out to stay on top. The game opened in spectacular fashion with Abers booting an eight goal haul by the end of the first term. Had Greenvale not kicked a goal after the siren, they would have only managed one point in that first quarter.

Though citing injury and having key position players out, Greenvale fought back hard in the second quarter, keeping Abers to 1.2 for the quarter as by Half time, Abers still held the lead 9.7 v 6.2 and with characteristic grit and determination, managed to stay off the opposition to record a resounding win over Greenvale 15.11 to 9.8.   Our own Joshua Cubillo was named best on ground.  Now a game clear, we are proud to reach the top spot on the competitive Premier Division ladder.  The boys know we have to stay fit and keep the momentum going when we meet rival club Strathmore (away) this week at Lebanon Reserve.

In other matches, the Under 18s received a reality check by having their five week winning streak cut down swiftly. Final score was 4.11 to 9.12 in a tight match where the result could have gone any way had our boys been up to the challenge. Coach Brett Gourley rallied his charges by declaring that they should use this setback to focus on the weeks ahead.

The Reserves recorded a win, once again confirming that they are a team to be reckoned with. Wth several key position players dropped by to the side from the Seniors, the outcome was as pleasing as anyone could really hope for.  We also congratulate player Toby Hickmott celebrating his 100th game for the club, along with Mark Williams, reaching his 150th game milestone.

As a mark of respect, all senior teams this past weekend, wore black armbands in honour of U18 Coach Brett Gourley's grandmother who passed away recently after a short illness.  May she rest in peace.
